Welcome Back Grace!
From Lower School Interim Director, Cynthia Harris: Grace brings her many passions to Roeper, which include improvisational theatre, coaching soccer, and making art and poetry from found objects. Grace's grounding in social justice compels her to deepen her understanding of how to give children autonomy while holding them accountable to their community.
INTERVIEW:
What is your position?I am a Stage II Associate Teacher, supporting Kathryn! I’ll be teaching phonics lessons to small groups of students in our classroom.
One or Two Life Highlights?
One highlight was my time at Kenyon College, I studied English and Drama and made friends with lovely people. This time in my life is feeling like a highlight too! I play soccer, make theatre with all kinds of people, and spend time with family.
Live Anywhere in the world?
I would share a house with my siblings in Detroit! I love Detroit’s public art, food, neighborhood gardens, architecture, and music. That said, I would also love to try living in New York City- I have loved ones there that I miss!
Background
I am the youngest of three kids, and all of us like to perform: comedy, opera, plays, musicals. We grew up in West Bloomfield and went to WB public schools and enjoyed taking dance classes, playing soccer, and doing community theatre as a family- including my parents! I have a lot of memories with family and extended for holidays, weekends, summer vacations. My siblings and cousins are close to me.
Hobbies/Interests
I play adult recreational soccer in Detroit. I also love to sing, read, and write. I’m really interested in performance; I like to go to live music shows, puppet shows, and theatre. Theatre has taught me a lot about cooperation, and I love figuring out how groups (teams, classrooms, neighborhoods) grow into communities.
Skill I love to share:
I love to share stories and teach reading skills based on the Science of Reading approach. I also had a lot of fun assisting math instruction in my first year at Roeper. It’s exciting to watch students interpret problems and stories using methods you’ve shared with them.
What appealed to you about Roeper?
I think Roeper brings families together to work on how we can treat children with more dignity. I love that the Roeper model of learning trusts students to pose questions and trusts teachers to guide rigorous investigation; through Roeper I’ve met people of all ages who can solve problems with a sense of compassion, and it gives me hope!
