Welcome to the Roeper School

At Roeper, we nurture inquisitiveness, creativity, and problem solving within a community that values pluralism, compassion, and civic responsibility. Every student is known, every voice matters, and every learner is supported on their journey to becoming their most authentic self.

Founded in 1941 by educational pioneers George and Annemarie Roeper, our school has a long and proud history. In 1956, the Roepers dedicated the school’s mission to serving gifted children—making Roeper the oldest independent school for gifted learners in the United States.

While we honor our roots, we are also leaders in forward-thinking, research-based education. Our faculty create dynamic classrooms (often outdoors!) that inspire intellectual risk-taking, creative exploration, and the understanding that failure is a natural and essential part of growth. We cultivate critical, ethical, and global thinking—equipping our students with the confidence, skills, and values they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

We are an inclusive community where learning extends beyond academics. Intellectual, artistic, athletic, social, and emotional experiences are all part of a Roeper education—helping each student discover who they are and whom they aspire to become.

At the heart of our mission is the belief that finding and using one’s voice builds moral courage. Every day, Roeper students are encouraged to examine the world around them, reflect deeply, and speak up for themselves and others. In doing so, they develop the integrity and resilience to make a meaningful difference.

You’ll find a warm, engaged community here—dedicated families, passionate educators, and students whose curiosity and ideas make our school come alive. Our faculty and families work together to foster a joyful, inclusive environment where learning is both rigorous and deeply human.

I invite you to explore this website to get a glimpse into life at Roeper. You’ll find stories, images, and perspectives that highlight the vibrancy of our school—and the incredible spirit of our students, who never stop asking questions or seeking understanding.

We hope you’ll inquire about enrollment and visit us in person—at our Lower School in Bloomfield Hills or our Middle and Upper School in Birmingham. We’d love to welcome you.

Warm regards,

Anne M. Glass, Ed.M.
