Roeper Receives Generous Grant From The USA Swimming Foundation
The USA Swimming Foundation awarded The Roeper School a grant for $10,500 in support of the Make A Splash At Roeper program. The Roeper program began in 2010 is one of only four Make A Splash programs in Michigan. Since 2010 Make A Splash At Roeper has taught nearly 300 students.
This year’s Make A Splash At Roeper program will run August 19 -23, 2013. This program is open to children 3 to 14 years old of diverse communities. The fee is $10 per child, classes are one-hour and offered in the mornings and afternoons. Registration will be held Saturday, August 10 from 9:30 until 11:00am. All participants must attend the registration to be involved in the program. Registration questions should be directed to email@example.com .
Make A Splash is the national child-focused water safety initiative of the USA Swimming Foundation. The initiative aligns the nation’s top learn-to-swim resources in an effort to raise awareness of water safety and provide opportunities for all children to learn to swim. The following statistics demonstrate the need for action:
- Nine People drown each day in the U.S.
- In ethnically diverse communities, the youth drowning rate is more than the national average.
- Nearly six out of 10 African-American and Hispanic/Latino children are unable to swim – nearly twice as many as their Caucasian counterparts.
- The key indicator in this was not race, but family – Children from non-swimming households are eight times more likely to be at-risk of drowning.
- While about 1/3 of white children from non-swimming families go on to learn to swim, less than 1/10 of children in non-swimming African-American families do.
According to Carolyn Lett, Roeper School Diversity Coordinator and champion of the Make A Splash program, “Since its foundation, the Roeper School has embraced and promoted diversity, inclusiveness, equity and justice and as we seek to further our mission of positive change through education and outreach. Participation in the Make A Splash program fulfills all those goals…and more.”
Roeper will be hosting a Pool Party Fundraiser to raise additional funds for the program on Saturday, July 13, 2103 from 2:00 – 5:00pm at the Lower School Campus (41190 Woodward Ave., Bloomfield Hills, MI). The cost is $5/person or $20/family. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The $10 lesson fee does not cover all program costs. This grant money and additional monies raised will allow even more children to learn how to swim.
