Ernie Righetti Honored by State Athletic Directors as Regional Athletic Director of the Year
Michigan’s professional organization of school athletic directors, the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (MIAAA), has selected Ernie Righetti of The Roeper High School as regional Athletic Director of the Year. One of only fourteen administrators state wide to be honored by the MIAAA, Righetti was presented the award in Traverse City on March 18, 2013 at the annual MIAAA Mid-Winter Conference in which over 500 athletic directors participate.
Ernie Righetti has served as the athletic director at The Roeper School for 31 years. According to Ed Sack, Roeper coach and teacher, in those years, he has transformed an athletic department that had an elementary-sized gym with nails popping up from the floorboard, one set of uniforms for all female athletes, and minimal equipment into a well-respected, consistently competitive, and viable athletic program with a new gymnasium that was built with funds that Righetti was instrumental in raising. Ed Mehlberg of Oakland Christian School says, “Ernie Righetti has unselfishly served as a progressive and consistent coach and athletic director. His leadership and dedication have stimulated a quality athletic program and encouraged exemplary sportsmanship.” Lisa Baker, Upper School Director at The Roeper School states, “Roeper has a no-cut policy; Ernie is insistent that this policy is the backbone of our program. That’s because Ernie believes in students’ capacity for growth over time – rather than inherent natural ability. I’ve watched Ernie advocate, donate money, give advice, and attend weddings and funerals. This guy never quits. He cares deeply for our school, for his athletic program, and for the students and their families. His tough-love approach has made him a fixture here. His student-athletes know that he means business and they also know that if they need help, he will be there.”
The MIAAA is a 50+ year old association with nearly 700 members serving as athletic administrators in numerous high schools and junior high/middle schools in Michigan. As partners with the Michigan High School Athletic Association, the MIAAA works to promote the educational value of interscholastic athletics and the role and profession of athletic director. The MIAAA is very proud to spotlight the work of Ernie Righetti, a man whose work and values best mirrors those of the association.
