ROEPER STUDENTS PLACE 5TH IN NATION AT FORENSICS COMPETITION
Two seniors at The Roeper School, Tom Allen of Detroit and Aaron Bernard of Birmingham, placed 5th in the Nation at the National Catholic Forensic League - Grand National Tournament held in Philadelphia May 25-26, 2013. 222 teams from around the country competed in the Grand National Tournament. Tom and Aaron competed in the Public Forum Debate Category, where 2-person teams debate in a manner persuasive to non-specialist lay judges. The debate was focused on the question of whether or not the main goal of U.S. public education ought to be to close racial and economic achievement gaps. Tom and Aaron were one of only five teams to receive a perfect win/loss score (5-0) in preliminary rounds. This marks Aaron Bernard’s fourth national tournament and Tom Allen’s third, and both students have consistently placed in the top 3 in more than 30 competitive speech tournaments over the past three years. The Roeper Debate team is coached by Dan Jacobs, Paul Carlton and Dennis Bernard.
