Birmingham, Mich. – February 14, 2013- Congratulations to the twenty two members of Roeper Model United Nations who participated in the Model United Nations of the University of Chicago from February 7-10, 2013. Roeper students represented the Republic of Turkey on ten different United Nations committees and Brazil, North Korea, and Office of Disarmament Affairs on three other crisis committees at the 2500 student conference. Following the opening session, Roeper students received a private one hour briefing by the Turkish Counsel-General to Chicago, Dr. Fatih Yildiz, who outlined Turkey’s position in the world, its related foreign policy objectives, and answered student questions regarding Turkey’s specific positions.
Roeper senior Tom Allen and sophomore Michael Deneroff received an Honorable Mention award for their significant efforts in the Historic General Assembly of 1971. Roeper sophomore Aaron Baker and freshman Isabel Ivanescu were recognized with a Verbal Commendation for their strong work in the Allied Control Council of 1990.
Leading the delegation as Turkey’s ambassador was senior Aaron Bernard, accompanied by senior delegates Claire Dennis, Brooke Michelson, Samantha Heiman, Spenser Solys, Erica Parker, and Amy Romano. Other students representing Roeper were juniors Farid Alsabeh, Marie Carozza, Eli Simons, Rachel Stamler-Jonas, Cecelia WatryandMaddie Wilson; sophomores Shawn Anderson, Brielle Ashford, andCourtney Fox; and freshmen Deven Misra and Adwoa Tandoh.
The delegates represented Turkey, Brazil, DPRK, and the Office for Disarmament Affairs with distinction, and did significant preparation in research and writing. Roeper’s Model UN Advisor is Michael Ruddy, and was assisted at the conference by faculty member Jarie Ruddy.
