ROEPER LOWER SCHOOL CHESS TEAM WINS SCHOOL’S FIRST STATE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP PLUS MANY OTHER AWARDS
The Roeper K-3 Chess Team took first place (Co-champions) at the 2012 Michigan Scholastic Club Championship on Saturday, November 17, 2012 in Lansing, Michigan. Roeper’s K-5 Chess Team took third place. The tournament was open to students in grades K-12 and awarded medals to the teams and individual competitors that reached the highest possible point levels. This is the third year that Coach Diallo Smith, of Detroit, has lead the Roeper chess team.
In addition to the teams placing, the following Roeper students received medals for individual achievement:
Aiden Song – 1st place (State Co-Champion) in K-3 division
Bryce Bottesi – 12th place in K-3 division
Toby Morrow – 13th place in K-3 division
Josiah Smith – 1st place (State Co-Champion) in K-5 division
Max Morrow – 9th place in K-5 division
Blake Bottesi – 12th place in K-5 division
“There is a very high caliber of skill at these events as most clubs have been competing for much longer and are regional based which means they pull from a much larger group of students,” said Smith. “Every student played a huge part of the team’s success and I couldn’t have asked for a better effort.” There are thirty members on the Roeper Chess Team.
