GENERAL INFORMATION

The Roeper School is a coeducational day school for gifted and talented children. It is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS), and a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and Association of Independent Michigan Schools (AIMS). The school is organized into three divisions: Lower School, ages 3-11; Middle School, grades 6-8; and Upper School, grades 9-12. The Lower School is located on a 12-acre, wooded campus in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The Middle/Upper School campus is located in Birmingham, Michigan.

History

The school was founded in 1941 in Detroit by George and Annemarie Roeper, noted German educators. It moved to Bloomfield Hills in 1946 and was reorganized as a school for gifted children ten years later.

Annemarie Roeper is now living in California and can be contacted by email at amroeper@aol.com or by visiting her website at www.roeperconsultation.com.

Student Body

The school enrolls over 630 students from 60 communities throughout the greater Detroit metropolitan area. From its inception, the student population represented a wide variety of ethnic, cultural, racial and economic backgrounds and this continues to be the case. The school strives to educate gifted children in a manner consistent with The Roeper School Philosophy.

Faculty

There are over 100 faculty members, affording a 1:9 teacher/student ratio in the Lower School and 1:13 ratio in the Middle/Upper School. Teachers are selected for their ability to provide continuing challenges and stimulation, to develop a world- and future-oriented curriculum, to foster problem-solving as well as fact-finding approaches, to create a learning experience which is creative, disciplined and meaningful, and to promote an environment that encourages parental participation.
