About Us
MIDDLE SCHOOL

The professionals in The Roeper Middle School understand its "kids in the middle". Our students come to us as Grade 6 children and leave after Grade 8, transformed into nearly full grown adolescents. Our program caters to the academic, social, and emotional needs of this developmental stage. At the same time, the broad array of individual differences among our students is understood and accommodated through flexibility in placement and individualization. Our Middle School staff shares an understanding of the developmental level of its students and is loyal and enthusiastic in their support.

Welcome from Middle School Director – Carolyn Borman

Roeper’s Middle School is the place where students experience a transformative 3-year period before high school. Underlying the learning process is Roeper’s unique culture, which is rooted in our school’s philosophy. Our environment is one in which students are able to express their individuality during a time of life which is often filled with insecurity. Their teachers demonstrate a deep understanding of their needs and a dedication to helping each child grow in his or her own way. By the end of eighth grade, students are ready for the greater independence and rigor of our Upper School. This is accomplished through an academic program which has depth and by a culture which emphasizes responsibility and respect.

Classes in our academic program encourage deep critical and analytic thinking while exposing students to the breadth of information which they crave. Students also learn the basic skills needed to be successful in school. Teachers use a variety of methods in their classrooms to maintain student interest and involvement. Students are also able to take higher level core classes and select from a broad range of electives.

Responsibility and respect are important values of our philosophy. Each day, students may have one 45-minute free block and lunch, which are unsupervised. It is their responsibility to make good behavioral choices. Through this, they are learning how to be responsible for their own behavior. They generally use the time doing homework, working with teachers, or socializing with friends. Respect is the one rule that we live by– everything we do should show respect for ourselves, each other, our school, and the world beyond.

I believe that our emphasis on responsibility and respect, combined with teachers who provide individualized support and academic challenge, is the recipe for success. It is a pleasure to see the students grow in maturity, competence and responsibility in the Middle School as they prepare to meet the challenges of Upper School.

Sincerely,
Carolyn Borman
