MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMICS

The pace of our academic program and its conceptual depth is well matched to our able population. Roeper Middle School students read whole novels, not parts of novels. Discussions focus on ideas, symbols, and character development, not facts. Whereas our students are exposed to much factual content, it is the process of learning -- research skills, thinking skills, abstract reasoning, and creative problem solving -- which is far more important. Students are prepared in their three years of Middle School for the increased demands of Upper School.

Homeroom Structure
Middle School homeroom is the key to the young adolescent student’s staying focused, centered and comfortable. The homeroom is the communication hub for parents, students and teachers, where the advisor keeps everyone in the loop. It is also the center for discussions, traditions and building cohesion for the entire school community. There is a curriculum that changes yearly to accommodate the changes in 11-14 year olds. Topics covered include communication, goal setting, study strategies, time management, stress alleviation and control, relationships, learning styles and other topics designed to empower the student to take control of his/her education.
