The Lower School program is designed to meet the needs of gifted students ages 21/2 through 11. The program's content and structure are responsive to developmental stages in the lives of children. Learning experiences are designed to help students find depth and personal meaning in their studies. Fundamentally, Roeper teachers respect and facilitate the individual abilities, needs, and interests of young learners.
At each of the four Lower School Stages, developmentally appropriate opportunities for choice, decision making and problem solving assist the students' developing sense of empowerment and personal responsibility for their own learning. Each Stage brings opportunities for greater levels of abstraction in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, foreign language, visual and performing arts, technology, and physical education.
Small student-teacher ratios make it possible for teachers to be close to each student's learning experience. Individual learning styles can be understood so that strengths are nurtured and strategies developed between teacher and student to most effectively meet that student's needs.
The Lower School passionately embraces the learning needs of children, preparing students to actively engage in the world as it exists now and in the future. Our daily interactions are guided by the founding philosophy of our founders, George and Annemarie Roeper, and are based on relationships bound by joyful and mutual respect for all members of our community.
Our teaching teams are an amazing group of dedicated professionals who are committed to providing an environment of learning rigor while attending to the academic and social emotional growth of our students. Our curriculum is structured to develop skill sets that are developed based on student voice, and designed to allow students to create, collaborate, and have a shared sense of meaning and purpose.
The Roeper School has been a paragon of progressive education since its founding by Annemarie and George Roeper, and this is a model of education particularly relevant for gifted learners. While our Philosophy and Mission for gifted learners is unique in the world of education, our curriculum is aligned with best practices which foster critical thinking skills and preparation to meet the needs of 21st Century learners. We welcome an opportunity to share the difference we can make for your gifted learner.
Sincerely,Leslie Anita Hosey, Ph.D.Lower School DirectorThe Roeper School
